Pokemon Legends A-Z

Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings a fresh approach to the familiar Pokémon formula, combining exploration, real-time battles and the return of Mega Evolution. Released on October 16, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, the game became one of the franchise’s major recent releases ahead of Pokémon’s 30th anniversary in 2026.

A Pokémon Adventure Set in One City

Unlike many previous Pokémon games, which take players across multiple towns, routes and regions, Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place entirely in Lumiose City, the setting familiar to fans of Pokémon X and Y.

The city is undergoing a redevelopment project designed to help humans and Pokémon coexist. However, mysterious incidents involving powerful Pokémon that Mega Evolve uncontrollably threaten this vision.

Players join Team MZ, meet a variety of characters and investigate these incidents while competing in the Z-A Royale, a tournament in which Trainers attempt to climb the ranks from Z to A.

The adventure begins with a choice of three partner Pokémon: Chikorita, Tepig or Totodile. From there, players explore Wild Zones, catch Pokémon, complete missions and build a team capable of taking on increasingly challenging opponents.

Gameplay: Real-Time Battles Change the Formula

One of the game’s biggest changes is its battle system. Instead of waiting for opponents to take turns, players and their Pokémon move around the battlefield and execute attacks in real time.

Timing, positioning, attack range and the ability to dodge incoming moves all become important. This creates a more action-oriented experience than traditional Pokémon RPGs, although it may take some getting used to for longtime fans.

Mega Evolution is another central feature. Certain Pokémon can temporarily transform into more powerful forms, providing a strategic advantage in difficult encounters.

The game also includes online and local multiplayer battles, giving players opportunities to test their teams against other Trainers.

Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A Worth Playing?

The game’s greatest strength is its willingness to experiment. Real-time combat makes battles more dynamic, while the compact setting gives Lumiose City a central role in the story. Mega Evolution also provides a welcome connection to Pokémon X and Y, while introducing new Mega-Evolved forms.

However, the single-city setting may feel less varied than exploring an entire region. Players who prefer traditional turn-based combat might also miss the slower, more tactical battles of earlier games. The repeated cycle of catching Pokémon, completing missions and competing in ranked battles may not appeal equally to everyone.

Overall, Pokémon Legends: Z-A offers an interesting alternative to the traditional Pokémon formula, particularly for players who enjoy action-oriented gameplay, collecting and competitive battles.

What Role Does It Play in Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary?

Pokémon celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026, marking three decades since Pokémon Red and Green debuted in Japan in 1996.

Although Pokémon Legends: Z-A was released in 2025 rather than specifically as a 30th-anniversary launch, it has become part of the wider celebrations. Its Mega Dimension expansion continues the adventure with new areas, Pokémon and Mega Evolutions. In February 2026, anniversary announcements also highlighted Mega Garchomp Z, which players could encounter through a Mystery Gift event.

The game therefore connects the anniversary celebrations with the franchise’s ongoing development rather than serving as the anniversary’s main new release.

With its distinctive setting, revamped battles and expanded Mega Evolution mechanics, Pokémon Legends: Z-A demonstrates how the series continues to experiment while retaining the collecting and exploration that have attracted fans for generations.
